Editing

Today we continued our filming by doing a voiceover. I was the one doing the voiceover and it was hard to make sure the voiceover was not too long or short. We made a voiceover for each building and for the intro and outro. The noises around us made the voiceover a second or longer, but we plan to edit it out.  Then we started the editing process. During the editing process, I helped to edit the commercial and help pick the inserts. I looked up inserts online of the courtroom and the dance team. The inserts helped us to show the part of the school we were not able to film. I also had inserts of the band to show the band and the instrument that may be available. The inserts were not hard to find because they were all online.

We began to dump our footage on the computer. We started with building four and there we had to cut most of the footage. Some of the footage was kept and a pan was used to transition to building 17. I started to help with editing the footage. Some of the footage was hard to edit because it would make it too long. There were also some transitions used like cross dissolves. There were also some others like open circles. The editing was harder than I thought because we had to cut some of the footage to make it shorter. We had a ten-second clip that was edited down to four seconds. We ended up finding the needed footage.

We figured out a way to fix this by inserting the clips. This helped to make it longer. We needed a way to edit the footage without cutting out all of the useful footage. We used a pan to transition to the next building. I think it was a good transition to show the next building. These transitions helped to make the clips that were short longer. Even though there were really some bumps, I think we are off to a good start. Next class, we plan to put more transitions and to edit it more. We also plan to fix the order of the buildings, so the commercial flows better.  We will then export it when we are done.

Filming the Commercial

Today we started to film our commercial. First, I helped to set up the camera. I was the actor in the video. First, we went to the front of the school. I stood in the front and said welcome. I suggested that we move to a spot that captures the school better because the lighting was not good at building 20. We decided to move the opening to the senior patio. We thought that the patio would be better. I stood in front. I also said welcome to the school.

I also showed off the patio. I suggested that we take a tilt to show our school motto on the top. I moved in different spots to get a good view. Next, we went to the science building. There I stood in front of a wall and started to walk. I displayed that it was the science building and this is where most of our science classes take place. There were a few takes retaken in order to get the track shot.  Next, we went to building 17. I suggested that we pan over to the building. I stood on the stairs to show the building.

There was a pause on the way to building 21 to get a close up of the building 17 sign. We then went to building 21. I talked about there being law classes in there. I stood on the stairs to get a medium close up. I also said goodbye at building 21 for the outro. Last we went to building five. I went to the top of the stairs so we could get a low shot. There I showed off that we have some of our band classes. I also showed the Cambridge classes. I did not direct, but I suggested certain things to put in the commercial. I also suggested where the lighting could be better.

Storyboard

Our team collectively created a storyboard that would stand at the maximum time of thirty seconds for our first commercial. The overall theme of the storyboard was to portray the programs offered here at Fort Lauderdale High School. A total of five boxes was used out of the six to accurately lay out the time frame for each scene that was planned to be carried out. Our team included an intro and an outro when laying out the storyline of the commercial. In between the ending and the beginning, each box will represent a specific building our team wants to incorporate when talking about specific programs offered. Each building will be talked about briefly and will be introduced for at least five seconds long. A jump cut transition would be used to move on from talking about one building onto the next. Our group will incorporate tilts and pans to showcase each building that will be talked about   with the addition of voiceovers narrating the plot of the commercial. To show the actress on screen for a few scenes, our team will be using both medium shots and medium close ups to have the person on camera doing the hand signals and introducing the school. The camera will be placed at a eye level angle without any tilts to properly showcase the figure and the buildings within each shot. When talking about the programs offered here at Fort Lauderdale High School, inserts will be used to display the different types of rooms that holds the special programs along with listing the various AICE and AP classes offered. Our team went in chronological order when determining which building will be talked about first. The order goes from intro, building 17, building 5, building 8, building 21, then the end. Our team presented the storyboard along with the script to the commercial for our teacher to approve on October 17th, 2019.

Here is the actual photo of the storyboard our team constructed together.

Editing Lesson Blog

Today I learned the basics of the editing process and how to check out a camera. To check out
a camera, we need to fill out an equipment agreement form, then bring it to the desk. Lastly,
place the form in the class folder. To edit, we will be using Pinnacle Studios. First, the SD card
goes into the SD card reader. The SD reader then goes into the USB. A folder will be made for
the footage. All the footage goes into the folder. Go to DCIM to get your footage. If it is not there
go to AVCHD and click on what pops up, then stream. Once the footage is moved to the
computer, the SD card can be removed.

To import the footage goes to your folder, then go to pinnacle studios. Look for your folder by
clicking on my computer then desktop and start to import. The raw footage will be at the top. In
order to edit build on AV track two. AV track one is for titles and AV track three is for music.
Drag the footage to AV track two to edit. To cut something move the line before the clip you
want to cut. Next, click the razorblade, once the razorblade is selected it will split, then you
press delete. To add transitions right-click. Next click effects in, then transitions in.

To make the title hit T for a title. To make it move go to motions on the top of the screen. Music
is added the same way as footage. To remove audio like dialogue, right-click on the clip and
press detach audio. Then press delete to remove the audio. To export press MPEG 4. Pick the
best quality option, then click start to export. You will only need to export your final video. You

can save the video to your folder. Then you will not need to go to Pinnacle Studios again.

Planning Blog for FLHS Commercial

Today my group is planning our school commercial. We are creating a to-do list to prepare for our scenes and make sure we have all the necessary items and people. We also want to be able to have backup plans in case something goes wrong either before, during, or after production. Having this list will make us more efficient and organized so that filming can continue no matter what happens. We will be listing the pieces that go into any film. This list is one of the crucial parts of any great video. Here is what will be going into our film:

  1. Props: School merchandise
  2. Costumes: School shirt and jeans
  3. Schedule: On October 14 we will film the commercial. On October 21st we will edit our film and also reshoot and scenes needed if time permits. On October 28 our commercial will be done and turned in for grading.
  4. Location: Building 5- Cambridge and art, Building 8- Science, Building 17- Cambridge, Building 21- Law, Front of School- Welcome
  5. Backup Plan- If it rains, we will put inserts and a voiceover in the commercial. If someone is absent we will continue filming and have them edit some of the footage. If school is close we will only have inserts and voiceover for our commercial or we will set our film date a bit earlier.

Research Conventions and Codes

Today in my AICE Media class, my partners and I started planning a commercial. We were given options as to what we wanted our commercial to be about. Once we picked between the main topics: products, anti-vaping, and our school. We then narrowed the selection to programs and clubs. After considering the pros and cons of filming the programs or clubs at our school, we decided unanimously to do programs. We choose programs at our school because it would be more efficient, we would have an organized structure, meet the time criteria, and we have more creative control when filming. The other options were seemed inconvenient for us in many ways. For the product's commercials, we don't have much creative control since there are so many commercials about the products we are allowed to do and we would have to do countless hours of research on what commercials are out there and then try thinking outside the box for the commercial. The anti-vaping commercial requires multiple actors and we would have to figure out how to send a strong and emotional message about vaping without showing anyone vaping.  These reasons are why we choose to do our school for our commercial.

Hi, welcome to my blog. My name is Melshida Durand, and a Junior at Fort Lauderdale High School. I will be posting my projects and assignments. I am writing this blog to keep my teacher updated and to show my process when creating the projects. I am excited to start working on our commercial and to be more creative. This class will be very interesting because I will be able to learn about the process it takes to make a film. A little about me is that I like to read. I also like to play instruments and try new things. I always try to be the best I can be. I enjoy spending time with my friends and family. I also like to learn to cook more food.
